EXAMINATION PE

​

We currently deliver GCSE PE through CCEA GCSE Physical Education specification which offers opportunities to develop a healthy, active lifestyle and explore a range of physical activities.

​

It inspires, motivates and challenges students and enables them to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career pathways.

​

Students explore health, the active leisure industry, physical fitness, activities and sports through academic and physical challenges.

The three components of the specification are integrated, so students apply what they learn for the written examinations to the practical component, and vice versa. This provides a good base for further study at advanced level, for example our BTEC Sport, Fitness and Personal Training.

​

This qualification builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed through the Physical Education Area of Learning.

​

This specification is a linear qualification: students take all the assessment at the end of the course; 50% examination (2x papers 25% each) and 50% practical.

​

The specification has three components:

​

· Component 1: Factors Underpinning Health and Performance

· Component 2: Developing Performance

· Component 3: Individual Performances in Physical Activities.

Course Title/ Qualification:

BTEC National Sport, Fitness and Personal Training (2019)/

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport and Fitness (603/4925/6)

About the course: 

​

The mandatory content gives learners an introduction to working in the sport and fitness industry and forms a basis for progression to further study. Part of the mandatory content also allows learners to develop technical skills in working with clients in a gym environment, carrying out gym inductions and leading small-group-based exercise supported by underpinning knowledge of the body and specific populations, which are all required to work as a gym instructor in the health and fitness industry.

Units covered

Unit A - Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry

In Unit A learners develop their knowledge and understanding of the sport and active leisure industry and will provide opportunities to look at the scope and breadth of the industry.

Unit B - Health, Wellbeing and Sport

In unit B learners reflect on how health and wellbeing is an area of growing importance in the UK. The sport and active leisure industry are aware of their impact on the physical, mental, and social health of individuals and how levels of physical activity influence daily living and overall wellness.

Unit C2 - Fitness Skills Development

In unit C2 learners will gain the knowledge and practical skills to plan and instruct a gym-based induction and exercise session for specific clients. To be able to do this effectively, it is necessary to understand the anatomy and physiology of the main body systems. How these body systems respond to acute exercise and adapt to long term regular exercise participation.

Assessment

100% internally assessed, this course is highly practical, and progression focused, it allows for practical and professional skills development. Assessment will take place through 360 guided learning hours through methods of reports, presentations, essays & practical activity. These will be graded from a pass to distinction with associated UCAS points.

Why study this course

When studied alongside two other Level 3 qualifications such as Travel and Tourism, Business, Health and Social care or ICT this broadens your potential career options and supports progression to a wide range of higher-education courses at university. Additionally, this is an excellent course for pupils who, after sixth form, progress directly to employment in the health and fitness sector as a gym instructor or have a part time income during university. 

Careers

There are many careers' options but here a few pathways you could choose to explore: teaching, research & analytics, nursing & caring profession roles, sports university courses, leisure centre roles & management, coaching & event coordinators, sports development, youth officer, emergency services and armed forces. The transferable skills you learn are useful no matter which career path you choose.
