We have two Tourism related qualifications on offer at KS4 and KS5:

Why should I choose Travel and Tourism?

​

  • It allows you to progress to Further/Higher Education, where you could study degrees or foundation degrees such as International Tourism Management or Event Management.

  • The course can also lead directly into a career in the airline industry, event management, within the cruise sector, marketing, as a resort representative or in a travel agency.

  • Tourism and Hospitality has a huge scope for employment. By 2025 the UK tourism industry will be worth over £257 billion, around 10% of the UK GDP. The industry supports 3.8 million jobs and has a huge impact on the UK economy.

Exam Board: CCEA GCSE Leisure, Travel & Tourism

 

What is CCEA GCSE Leisure, Travel & Tourism?

 

This is a current and relevant subject which explores topics such as types of leisure and tourism, marketing, sustainable tourism and working within the leisure and tourism sector.

It is assessed over 3 units.
 

  • Unit 1 is an exam focusing on the important part that leisure, travel and tourism play in today’s society as it continues to be a growth area in the UK.  This is completed at the end of year 11 and worth 40%

  • Unit 2 is an exam focusing on how organisations use techniques and materials to promote their products and services.  This is completed at the end of year 12 and worth 40%

  • Unit 3 is a controlled assessment assignment carried out in class and worth 20%

Key Stage 5

Travel and Tourism is an exciting course studied in Year 13 & 14 

Exam Board: Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism

No prior learning of Travel and Tourism at Key Stage 4 is required to study this course.

 

What is BTEC Level 3 Travel and Tourism?

 

  • This qualification has been designed to provide an all-round introduction to the travel and tourism sector

  • BTEC Level 3 is equivalent to 1 A Level

  • There is a combination of assessment styles – internal assignments, external tasks and a written exam.

  • It covers key knowledge and practical skills with a vocational focus

What will I study?

There are 4 units to Level 3 Travel and Tourism studied over 2 years.

In Year 13 we will look at

​

  • Unit 1 – The World of Travel and Tourism. This focuses on the components that make up travel and tourism and how they all fit together. This unit is an external exam.

  • Unit 3 – Promotion and Marketing in Travel and Tourism. This unit looks at promotion and how to market an attraction or event. This is assignment based. 

 

In Year 14 we study

​

  • Unit 2 – Global Destinations. In this unit we study many of the world’s leading destinations and learn what makes them popular. This unit is assessed as an external task – there is dedicated research time and then the task is completed under exam conditions.

  • Unit 9 – Visitor Attractions. This unit focuses on attractions and how they entice customers. This unit is internal assignment based.

Where possible class teaching will be enhanced by visits from people working in the industry to give insight to their job and tourism in general. There may also be virtual talks from people associated with leisure, travel and tourism. We try to incorporate trips to local tourist attractions and components of the travel sector such as leading hotels, Belfast City Hall, Christmas Markets, Belfast City Airport to further supplement learning.
